It’s been a minute since I’ve posted on here… and since I missed the somewhat traditional New Years day post. I thought why not just make a post about the home work setup in 2026. The last time I posted about that topic was 2020, and the world was a much diffrent place then.
So the setup I built in the summer of 2020 pretty much stayed in use through 2024 for daily use and continues to this day in regular if not daily use. I think the best way to describe any of this is a brief timeline of working spaces for me since the summer of 2020.
- Summer 2020 – Winter 2021, Townhome with workspace in living room as pictured previously in this blog thing
- Spring 2021-Fall 2024, bought a house in late winter 2021 and moved in early spring 2021 to a house. Moved entire setup to house into dedicated room basically only changed the keyboard and the monitors.
- Fall 2024 took a new job that is full time remote, decided it was time to update work space.
From summer of 2020 to Fall of 2024 I was remote-hybrid. Effectivley 1 day a week onsite the rest of the time remote. It wasn’t a constant thing, but for the most part that was the schedule. In the fall of 2024 I took a new position that was full time remote and had an allowance for upgrading the home workspace. I had been contemplating upgrading the home workspace to a new desk for a while. The first desk was bought to fit the needs of the time and honestly if you have a functional desk you have a functional desk. Somewhere in late 2023 I was starting to feel the constraints of the overall size of the desk and also the demands of industry involvement where it was better to use something other then work equipment. On the personal side of things I was starting to feel the age of the old Ikea desks and gaming starting to finally come into play as the ergonomics where catching up with my 40 something body.
Which is a very long way of saying in late 2024 I upgraded to this workspace at home.

A standing corner desk with 48in return on the right side. The other upgrades since the last desk photo include;
- 27″ monitors
- Laptop stand for work laptop
- Dedicated headphone w/ stand and charger
The laptop on the right and the ipad or personal devices and are in and out of the setup. What I have found is that they are very useful for rapid prototying things for work using personal gear before deploying anything on a work level.
So why did I update? Well I needed to use the personal laptop for industry groups I’m involved with but I couldn’t use my work laptop on for “reasons”. I also do a fair amount of remote learning via webinar and again the personal laptop is key for this. Also I’m of a certain age where sometimes it’s easier to write things out on paper before the screen. The extra desk space is very accomodating to that aspect.
What did I do with the old desk? Well it’s in the gaming office now holding my gaming PC setup and surprisingly I use it as a gaming PC on the standing desk a fair bit.
Also you should always decorate your personal workspace.
